GySgt. Benjamin F. Barrett, Jr. (USMC Retires) 79, of Miami, FL and husband of former Beaufort resident, Beatrice Barrett, died Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at his residence.

Funeral: 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 28, 2014, in the Joseph M. Wright Memorial Chapel of Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Home For Funerals. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the Beaufort National Cemetery.

Benjamin Franklin Barrett, Jr. was born on June 26, 1935 in Macon, Georgia, the son of Benjamin Franklin Barrett, Sr. and Ethel Miller Barrett. Both parents died before Benjamin reached the age of four and it was his aunt, Leola Barrett Clark, who took him in and raised him as her own. He is preceded in death by his extended family including his aunt who provided him with maternal inspiration and influence, and those whom he considered as his siblings: Russell Clark, Patrick Clark, Susie Mae Harris, Mamie Dinkins, William "Buck" Clark, and Jeanie Toomer.

Benjamin was a very talented and ambitious child. He attended Peach County High School in Fort Valley, Georgia where he developed his love for music. It was in Benjamin's heart to protect and serve and in 1952 he made the decision to enlist into the United States Marine Corps. At the beginning of his military career, he was stationed at Parris Island, South Carolina. He was later based at Camp Lejuene in North Carolina, Camp Pendleton in California, and 29 Palms, also in California. He served tours of duty during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

His passion for music led him to earn a position with the infamous Marine Corps Band. In doing so he became the first African-American assistant band leader of the Camp Lejuene Marine Corps Band. He attended the School of Music in Quantico, VA. He yearned to serve others, and tutored students at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. While stationed at Parris Island he met the love of his life, Beatrice. They were married and became the parents of two beautiful children. After serving his country for 20 years in the Marine Corp he was discharged from the Paris Island Marine Corps Base.

Benjamin relocated his family Miami, Florida. In keeping with his desire to serve, he joined the Miami-Dade County Police Department. He became a part of the Safe Streets Unit. His 20-year tenure garnered for him numerous honors and awards from local community and political leaders. He was recognized for his work on high profile police cases. He received the most outstanding student award in 1973 from the Metropolitan Police Institute in Miami Dade County. He was recognized by the Board of Commissioners of Miami-Dade County, Florida for his invaluable assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. He quickly advanced in rank of detective. He worked with the Juvenile Justice Center for the Miami-Dade County Courts.

Benjamin was baptized at the St. Louis C.M.E. Church in Marshallville, GA. In 2013, he joined the Mt. Hermon A.M.E. Church in Naranja, under the pastorate of Reverend Beverly Coffey. He found relaxing moments fishing, bowling, working crossword puzzles, and listening to classical music.

On Tuesday, October 14, 2014, with his wife and nurse at his bedside, Benjamin passed away peacefully at home.
