As a toddler, he was taken from Île de Ré by his parents with his siblings as a consequence of religious persecution. The family relocated to Amsterdam by December 1737, where they lived on Sint Jansstraat. The family was next in Manhattan in 1739.
In America, he was known as James Blanchard.

Gravesite Details
Those interred at the Middle Dutch Church graveyard were re-interred elsewhere in the mid-1800s, many in Green-Wood Cemetery. The plaque is where the church once stood. (Credit FAGID# 51536662)
