He married married Eliza Tyler ca. 1850 and fathered Laura (b. @1851), Amanda Leah (b. 07/18/56 - married a Zeiters), Lillie (b. 08/15/59 - married a Frey), George F. (b. @1864), and Sarah Rebecca (b. 02/04/67 - married William R. Cocklin). In 1860, he was a laborer presumably living somewhere in York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 7" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted in York County October 25, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November 12 as a private with Co. H, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg. He is listed without a middle initial in the company register.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 13, 1864, as a private with Co. E, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). During a charge at Blackville, South Carolina, his horse fell on him, injuring his back, and he discharged by surgeon's certificate May 29, 1865, at Lexington, North Carolina. He is in the company register with a middle initial of "E."

In 1870, he was living in Middletown, Dauphin County, but died at a daughter's home in Harrisburg although he made no mention of his family in his pension file. His organizational pension index claims he died on January 4, 1900, but obituaries and his tombstone belie that.
