Zazel was the second of nine children born to Commodore Perry Sloniger and Margaret Elizabeth (Urmson) Sloniger. The spelling of her name on her gravestone (Sloninger) shows up occasionally in the family history. Her father's obituary has the spelling Sloninger in the heading, but then reverts to the Sloniger spelling. All but two of Zadel's siblings are found in Find-a-Grave memorials. The two without memorials are Clair Ellis Sloniger (1894-1964) and Commodore Perry Sloniger Jr. (1906-1978).
