Robert Wilson Booton, a robust 96 year old, died Sunday, November 2nd in Lexington, Kentucky after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Tilton, Fleming County, Kentucky, the son of Wall and Annie Booton. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of seventy one years, Lula Hibberd Booton and by two brothers, James and Denman. He is survived by his two daughters, Kay Mangum of Lexington, Kentucky; Beverly (Ron) Schmiermund of Lakewood, Colorado; granddaughter Katherine Mangum of Washington, DC; grandson Scott (Jameika) Mangum and great grandson Kris Mangum of Barrington, Illinois.

Bob attended a one room school house in Tilton, and Fleming County High School. His inquisitive mind led him to the University of Kentucky where he graduated with BS(1940) and MS(1941) degrees in Farm Economics. At UK he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Alpha Zeta Honorary Fraternity, Block and Bridle Club, and YMCA, served in the student government, and was a life member of the UK Alumni Association. Bob met his wife, known to their friends as Lu, at UK and they were married in 1941.

Bob retired in 1983 after 40 years with the Uniroyal Tire Company where he held a number of management positions culminating in the Director of Production for the US. During his career he was active in a number of civic organizations including Rotary International, United Fund, Junior Achievement, the Chamber of Commerce and Score. Bob and his family were charter members of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Bob and Lu returned to Lexington in 1988, where they were members of 1st United Methodist Church. Bob served on the Administrative Board, was President of the Methodist Men and the church representative on the downtown Christian Unity Task Force.

In retirement Bob and Lu enjoyed traveling, and were enthusiastic supporters of UK’s women’s basketball team. Bob enjoyed many hours playing golf with friends, continuing an active life through his 96th year.

Bob was guided by his faith, and will be remembered by friends and family for his kindness, engaging smile, and optimism. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather whose devotion to his wife Lu during her long illness will be an enduring legacy to his family.

His family would like to thank his devoted physician, Dr. John Pappas, and his wife for their many kindnesses.
