The following was published in the August 28, 1941, issue of The Mountain Eagle (page 8):
Lydia Caudill Witt, the wife of Wheeler Witt, passed to the Great Beyond Saturday, August 12th at nine o'clock. After several weeks of agony and suffering she was taken to the Hazard Hospital for an operation and treatment, but was unable to withstand the operation. Twins were born to this fading mother and survived her by a few days. The bodies have been interred in the family burying ground on Doty after the funeral in the Doty Church on Monday, August 13. The mother is the daughter of James and Polly Caudill of Smithsboro. She leaves her husband and two small girls and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
