Nelson D. Atkin, 97, of Utica and formerly of North Syracuse, passed away Tuesday at the Masonic Care Community. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he graduated in 1935 from Meadville, PA, High School. For 50 years he had a camp on Cross Lake and had wintered in Ocala, Florida. He spent his last years at Acacia Village in Utica. In 1986, he retired as project manager from Nestle in Fulton. A 57-year member of Memorial Lodge No. 648 F&AM, he was Master of Centerville Lodge in 1978. Mr. Atkin was predeceased by his wives, the former Dorothy Barkman in 1981 and the former Nancy Cutillo in 1998 and his daughter, JudithAnn Hocker in 2006. Surviving are his son, Nelson D. (Sue) Atkin, II of Oregon; granddaughters, Barbara L. Venesky, KathyAnn Hocker and Karen (David) Vaver; great-grandchildren, Nicole Venesky, Mary Beth Plano, Alex Vaver, Shelby Vaver and Rebekah Vaver; stepdaughters, Jane Weinhold and Linda VanBuskirk and several step-grandchildren. Services will be Friday, November 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Fergerson Funeral Home with burial following in Riverview Cemetery, Baldwinsville. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 215 South Main St., North Syracuse with Masonic services at 6:45 p.m. Donations may be made to the Masonic Care Community, 2150 Bleeker Street, Utica, NY 13501.
