Edmund John Cridge was born on September 1, 1828 in Taunton, Somerset, England. He was baptized on September 21, 1828 at the Parish of St. James in Taunton. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Henry Proctor Gale. Edmund's parents were John Cridge (a carpenter) and Maria Beaton. The Cridges immigrated to the United States and settled in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. Edmund married Jane Warr (daughter of James Warr and Lavinia Bickley Hodgkins). They had seven children named James Warr, Maria Edith (Mrs. Herbert F. Hastings), Sarah Belle (Mrs. Andrew McLean IV), Edmund Lomax, Alfred George, Lavina Elizabeth, and William John Beaton. The Cridges lived at 74 Twelfth street in Troy. Edmund was a a naturalized U.S. citizen (source: 1855 New York census) and stove pattern maker. He started a business in 1856. His first location was at 5 Fulton Street (upstairs) in Troy. The second location was at 450 and 452 Fulton Street (probably due to a city fire in 1862). Stove patterns, of all descriptions, were manufactured to order and for sale. Edmund was also an active Episcopalian and a Masonic member of the King Solomon's Primitive Lodge, no. 91. From August 1891 to 1893 He lived in Detroit, Michigan. Edmund was a superintendent of the Michigan Stove Company Works' pattern department. He died on June 22, 1906 while visiting his daughter's family (the McLeans) at their summer home at Mamakating Park in Wurtsboro, Sullivan County, New York.

Edmund purchased the lot on Feb. 17, 1866 for $75.
