Captain 121st New York Infantry Volunteer Regiment from 1862 to 1864. Served as Aid de Camp to Major General Emory Upton in the 121st Regiment and 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, VI Corps. In 1865 ADC serving Upton in the 4th Iowa Cavalry Division, Cavalry Corps, Military Division of the Mississippi.

On October 10, 1872 married Grace Olcott, daughter of H.J. Olcott, in Cherry Valley, New York.
