Charles was the son of Lyman D. and Catherine Freelove Chaddon. His early years were spent in New Hartford, New York and Champaign, Illinois. He served in Company G, of the Illinois 25th Infantry during the Civil War. He married Annie Kate Price on September 29, 1865 in Champaign and they had several children, including Florence, Maude, George, Lorena (Irene), Cora and Roy. He was working as an architect before he died at the age of 57.
