Robert George Wermes, 83, of Sioux City died at Bickford Cottage following a brief illness.

Services were held at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with the Revs. Gary Snyder of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Lawernce McCarty of St. Mary of Sac City officiating.

Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 of Remsen, Iowa.

Robert was born to George and Anna (Thiel) Wermes.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army at age 20 and trained at Camp Chaffee in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Robert served as an armored tank driver with the 14th Armored Division and later joined the 3rd Army under Gen. George Patton known as "The Liberators". He served throughout the European Theatre of Operation including the southern area of the Battle of the Bulge.

He was awarded two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Ribbon, ETO Ribbon and AT Ribbon.

He earned the rank of U.S. Army Sergeant and was later hailed as part of "The Greatest Generation".

He married Violet E. Johnson in August 1950 at Souix City.

She passed away in Febuary 1979 in Sioux City.

He worked on family farms as a young man and also for the Civil Conservation Corps, Sioux Metal Products, and the former Miller-Kidder Chevrolet and then at Swift & Company as an engineer for 31 years untill his retirement in 1981.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 of Remsen. He had a giving heart and was the neighborhood handyman.

He was a provider and loving caregiver. Robert loved to visit with friends and family and shared the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed sharing his World War II experiences. Robert will be dearly missed by many.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen and son-in-law, Gerald Weiner of Dakota Dunes, and Karen Ludvigson of Sioux City; a brother, Donald Wermes of Port Orange, Florida; a granddaughter, Morgan Ludvigson; four step-grandchildren, Marni Meister, Kimberly Weiner, Landon and Hudson Ludvigson; and four great-step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son-in-law, Ron Ludvigson; a nephew, Paul Wermes; two sisters, Anna Marie Sererson and Loretta Roehrich; and a brother, Clarence Wermes.

Pallbearers will be Jim Ferris, Ron Wermes, Todd Tripp, Hank Roehrich, Dick Shaffer, and John "Buck" Thiel.
