WEARE – Donald C. Colby, 97, of Weare, passed away peacefully Monday August 4, 2014, at CRVNA Hospice House.

He was born on August 8, 1916, in Henniker the son of the late Clarence and Blanch Colby.

Don learned to survive by working with his two hands and became accomplished at anything from farming to logging and then onto the heavy equipment industry which he, up until a couple of weeks ago, enjoyed watching and teaching the tricks of the trade. Family and friends will deeply miss Don reminiscing about back in the day of running heavy equipment in the construction of I91 in 1960, digging test pits for the I93 passage through Plymouth in 1964 and digging test holes on I93 through Franconia Notch in 1967. Don purchased several acres of land in Epsom where he settled with his wife Hazel and raised his only son, Ron. After the passing of Hazel, Don moved to Weare, eventually marrying Doris and became very much a part of the community and continued with Don Colby Excavation.

Don is survived by his son, Ronald Colby of Epsom, and wonderful companion of many years, Ann Goldsmith of Henniker.

Donald was predeceased by his first wife of 45 years, Hazel (McDonald); and his second wife, Doris (Phelps); a step-daughter, Carol (Roddy); and a step-son John (Roddy).

A visiting hour will be held on Friday, August 8, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Waters Funeral Home, 50 South Main St., Concord.

Funeral Services will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Waters Funeral Home. The Rev. Rebecca Werner Maccini will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Blossom Hill Cemetery, Concord.
