James was born April 28, 1913, in Jacksonville, MO, and was a lifelong area resident. He served his country in the US Army during WWII, during which James was an X-Ray Technician serving in campaigns at Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley, and was awarded four bronze stars for the above-mentioned campaigns. After his military service, James joined the United States Postal Service and was a letter carrier for over 30 years before retiring. He was a 50 year member of the NALC and a member of the former Memorial Christian Church, where he served as a deacon. He enjoyed outdoor sports, including golf and tennis. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and a brother.
James is survived by his wife of 62 years, Maurine Large, of the home; two daughters, Judy Willhite and her husband Chet, Fairgrove, MO, and Linda Heitz and her husband Virgil, Lee's Summit, MO; four grandchildren, Melissa and Karen Willhite, Willard, MO, Derek Heitz, KCMO, and Monica Heitz, St. Louis, MO. James is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including his niece Gwen Burch, who offered James special help and care.
