DICKINSON MARTZ, Martha Elizabeth "To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, "........... Ralph Waldo Emerson. 65 was born in Grove City, Pa., on October 16, 1940, and passed away March 22, 2006. She was raised and attended schools in the San Fernando Valley. She was active in the choirs of St. James Presbyterian Church, Tarzana and Reseda High School. Martha and her sisters sang as a trio named the "Kelly Sisters" from early 1952 through 1965. "The Kelly Sisters" appeared on the "Bob Crosby Show" many times throughout the '50's and recorded records that landed them guest appearances on '60's dance shows "Ninth Street West" and "Hullabaloo." The Kelly Sisters worked with Johnny Sea and Liberace in Las Vegas and appeared on "The Dean Martin Show" in 1965. Martha went on to sing jazz in the late '60's with "The Ed Winters trio." Martha's father, Hal Dickinson, was the founder of the world famous "Modernaires". Her mother, Paula Kelly, joined the Modernaires and they performed many concerts with Glenn Miller and Tex Beneke. After the passing of her father in 1970, Martha sang on tour with the Modernaires for the next few years. Paula Kelly, her mother, passed away in 1992. Martha retired from her vocal career to raise her children. She worked for BAE Systems in Mojave off and on from 1987 through 2002. She rejoined the "Mod's" in 1996, and managed to work both jobs. Martha spent the last year touring with both of her sisters again - all of them "Modernaires" now. It was the first time in 40 years the girls were together on stage again and they performed throughout the United States. Martha was very proud to be part of the induction ceremony of the Modernaires into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. Martha is survived by: her partner, Gene McHenry; her daughter, Laurie Beth Sweet and her husband Steve; her son Richard C. Nickerson II and his wife Michelle; her son Michael Diederich; her sisters, Paula Kelly Cole, and Julie Lancaster and her husband DeWitt; her grandchildren, Frank Ball Jr., Tiffany Jeffress, Connery Nickerson, and Mitchell Nickerson; her great-grandchildren, Gaige Ball and Tatem Ball; her nieces, Jennifer Cole, Kelly Seidenberg, Dr. Vanessa Lancaster- Rosenow; and her grand niece Ashley Seidenberg. We will forever remember Martha's hearty laugh, sweet voice, and her happy and generous nature. As she always said to her loved ones and friends" I love you so much!" In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Martha's name as a member of "The Modernaires", inducted in 1999, The Vocal Group Hall of Fame c/o The Columbia Theater, 82 West State Street, Sharon, PA 16146, 724-983-2025.
