US Army Master Sergeant -
"A veteran of WWII passed away Wednesday at the Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotia. Justus Belfield, 98, spent his last full day on earth in his WWII army uniform Belfield had been in the facility since April 2013. His wife, Lillian, was already a resident when he moved into the facility to be with her. He spoke three languages: English, French, and German. After World War II, the center tells NEWS10 ABC that Belfield also took part in the “Berlin airlift”, which dropped food and supplies to the people of West Berlin. When asked what he always wanted to do, Belfield put on his application to the center that he “always wanted to stay in the military.” He was known to be very proud of his service."
OBIT. - "Justus R. Belfield, 98, of the Baptist Health Nursing and Rehab Center in Scotia, went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, November 12, 2014. MISSION NARRATIVE:
Justus “Jay” Belfield at age 19, enlisted in the National Guard and served in Troop A as a bugler, rifleman, machine gunner and horse handler from 1936 to 1940. The first mounts that he rode were Gringo, Grover and Garwood - all survivors of chasing Pancho Villa down in Mexico. Jay left the Guard when they removed the horses from service.
He enlisted in the US Army in 1943, serving in the 923rd Heavy Automotive Maintenance Co. and the 22nd Armored Division in Belgium and France during WW II. He was in charge of a unit responsible for the repair and maintenance of small arms. His unit was present at the Battle of the Bulge. He was rapidly promoted to Tech Sgt. E-7. He used to say he was just taking credit for the work others in his unit did. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946 he held the rank of Master Sergeant, E-8.
For a brief time in the reserves he participated in the Berlin Air Lift. He re-enlisted in the Army in 1949 and served a number of years as a recruiter. The names of those soldiers he recruited that were then killed in Korea haunted him. He also served in the 1202nd Army Security Unit and the US Army Reserves, being finally discharged in April of 1963 as a Warrant Officer.
Jay was a fighter – willing himself to live to see just one more Veterans Day – dressed in his full uniform as he lay in his bed, saluting all who came to visit, including some of our Patriot Guard Riders. With the Veterans Day mission accomplished, Jay answered “Last Call” quietly slipping away in the early hours of Nov.12th.
Another of our “Greatest Generation” heroes has left us. The Patriot Guard Riders will be privileged to be there to render Honor, Dignity and Respect for the life and service of Justus “Jay” Belfield.
