Lady Henrietta Frances Spencer was the daughter of John Spencer, 1st Earl Spencer and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz. On November 27, 1780 she married Frederick Ponsonby, 3rd Earl of Bessborough in St. James' Westminster, London, England. To this union four children were born; Lady Caroline Ponsonby, John William Ponsonby, 4th Earl of Bessborough, Major General Hon. Sir Frederick Cavendish Ponsonby, and William Frances Spencer Ponsonby, 1st Baron de Mauley. Lady Harriet was styled as Countess of Bessborough on March 11, 1793.

Lady Harriet and her lover Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Granville had one child; Harriet Emma Arundel Stewart. On Dec. 24, 1809 he married Lady Harriet's niece Harriet Elizabeth Cavendish. She was the daughter of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire and Lady Georgiana Spencer.
