Dixon III, John Tanner

John Tanner Dixon III, 56, of Manitowoc, WI, passed away Wednesday, November 12th after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

John was born in Reedsburg on October 25th 1958 to John and Ethyl (Wagner) Dixon II. John graduated in 1977 from Wisconsin Dells High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin and a Masters of Education from the University of Wisconsin Platteville. He married the former Mary Beth Wessing on November 30th 1985 in Lomira. John started his career at UW-Platteville working as a football grad assistant. He then went on to work full time as an admissions counselor and eventually instructor of physical education. In addition he coached football, wrestling, and baseball while at Platteville. In 1997 his family moved to Park Falls, where he became a high school physical education teacher, head football coach, head wrestling and head boys track coach. In 2001 John moved his family again to Manitowoc where he took on the head football coaching position, as well as physical education teacher and track coach. While in Manitowoc, John had the privilege of coaching both of his sons, an experience that he valued greatly. When not coaching or teaching, John enjoyed supporting his wife and four children at their various athletic and academic endeavors, walking Bucky the family dog and watching almost any sporting event.

Survivors include his loving wife: Mary Beth Dixon, Manitowoc; their four children: Molly Dixon, Milwaukee; Tanner Dixon, UW Platteville; Drew Dixon, UW La Crosse; Mallory Dixon, Manitowoc; two brothers and one sister-in-law: Matthew (Sue) Dixon, Madison; Jim Dixon, Brookings, SD; step-mother: Joani Dixon, Wisconsin Dells; mother-in-law: Audrey Wessing, Lomira; 7 brothers-in-law and 6 sisters-in-law: Bill (Penny) Wessing, Random Lake; Chuck Towne, Greendale; Sherry (Jim) Zickert, Eldorado; Diane (Jim) Larson, Waupaca; Jim (Sue) Wessing, Kewaskum; John (Joan) Wessing, Lomira; Steve (Cheryl) Wessing, Byron, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: John and Ethyl Dixon II; his father-in-law: Henry Wessing; one sister-in-law: Judy Towne.

John's life and spirit will be celebrated with visitation on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Parish on Grand, 1416 Grand Avenue, Manitowoc. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday led by Rev. Dan Schuster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 15th, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand. The Rev. Dave Pleier and Rev. Dan Felton will concelebrate the Mass with burial to follow at the Evergreen Cemetery. The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. In Lieu of flowers the family has set up a site at http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/john-dixon-4/KeeptheMemoryAlive and would appreciate donations to support research to find a cure for this tragic disease or memorial funds in his name would be greatly appreciated.
