Dennis Warren Fife, 69, of Chantilly, Va., died April 28 at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Va. The cause of death is not available.

Mr. Fife was born on Sept. 5, 1935, in Chicago, to the late George Edward and Ethel Mae Fife. He earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Michigan State University in 1956 and his doctoral degree in electrical engineering in 1965 from the University of Michigan.

Mr. Fife was an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University and George Mason University, teaching computer science and information systems programs.

He also worked for many corporations and government agencies including the Defense Communications Agency, National Institutes of Standards and Technology, Systems and Applied Sciences Corp. and the Institute of Defense Analysis before retiring in 2000.

Mr. Fife was the author of a textbook and numerous articles for professional publications. He served in many leadership roles within the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and was a member of Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu. He also was awarded the 1975 Silver Medal Award for Meritorious Service.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce Ann Fife; two children, Lisa Marie Fife of Fairfax and Raye Anne Fife of Deale; and three brothers.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at United Christian Parish, 2222 Colts Neck Road, Reston, VA 20191. Arrangements are by Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Virginia Division Inc., 124 Park St. SE, Vienna, VA 22180.
