Joseph H. Monroe, Sr., 83, of Steubenville, Ohio, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2011, at TMC West in Steubenville.
He was born June 18, 1927, in Tiltonsville, Ohio, a son of the late Howard A. and Ella E. "Nellie" (Petrel) Monroe. Joe was a retired auto mechanic for Bill's Fiat in Canton, Ohio, Protestant by faith and enjoyed repairing cars and working in his yard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald Eugene, James A. and Melvin L. Monroe; three sisters, Ruth Brown, Violet Lawson and Constance "Connie" Shreve; and a grandson.
Surviving are four daughters, Karen (Chuck) Kernen-Burger of Steubenville, Ruth Felton and Wanitta Devore, both of Wintersville and Elizabeth (Frank) Bonar of Rayland; three sons, Joseph Monroe, Jr. and William (Brenda) Monroe, both of Steubenville and James (Debbie) Monroe of Richmond, Ohio; his wife, Mildred Monigold Monroe of Steubenville; two sisters, Mary (John) Sloan of Steubenville and Hilda Dear of Canton, Ohio; 18 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 712 Third Street, Brilliant where services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. with Pastor Tommy Mills officiating. Interment will follow in Hopewell Cemetery, Rayland.
