Edward Leroy Gilbert, 84, of Burlington passed away at home.

He was born to Harry and Anna (Poppe) Gilbert.

He attended Avon Grade School and Mount Vernon High School. In about 1932 his parents purchased 5 acres on Bennett Road in Avon where Ed resided until 2004.

In 1941 he and a buddy joined the U.S. Navy to "see the world". And see it they did! Ed served as a Gunners Mate on a destroyer in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and from there went on to participate in most of the major battles in the Pacific. In December of 1944 he was shipped stateside and became a plank owner on the U.S.S. Los Angeles when it was commissioned. He was discharged from the navy January 12, 1947 and returned to Mount Vernon.

Ed worked near Concrete at a mill for several years. When his mother died, he returned to Mount Vernon to help his dad and began working at the Co-op feed store and gas station where he worked until it was purchased by Cenex. He drove a bulk oil truck for Cenex out of Marysvill for several years before retiring in 1983.

On June 5, 1970 he married Shirley (Collins) Maybee and they resided at the home place on Bennett Rd. Ed was well know for his huge garden, especially his Walla Walla sweet onions and his sweet corn, which was enjoyed by his many friends and neighbors. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend or neighbor in need and asked nothing in return.

His daily ritual to the coffee shop to swap stories with his buddies was a highlight in his day and many world problens were solved over those coffee cups! His love of the outdoors lead to many memorable camping and fishing excursions which are fondly remembered by his family.

Ed is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Linda Maybee; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Jamie Daut; and son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Mada Maybee; grandchildren, Holli, Jeremy, Nathan, Danielle, Derek, Crislyn, Ryan, and Aaron; four great-grandchildren. He is remembered fondly by his numerous nephews and nieces on both sides of the family.

His mother, father, four brothers and two sisters preceded Ed in death.

A committal service was held at Hawthorne Memorial Park, followed by a memorial service at the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church.
