Residence Marshalltown, Nativity Kentucky. Enlisted Oct. 2, 1861, as Fifth Corporal. Mustered Nov. 2, 1861.
Killed in action April 6, 1862, Pittsburg Landing, Tenn.(Battle of Shiloh)

John was probably buried as an unknown in a burial pit with fellow Union soldiers who fell at the Battle of Shiloh.

His widow applied for a pension in Feb 1863 with information that supports his enlistment in H Co. as for his age, the 1850 census shows he was in CA chasing gold fever along the American River, age was 27. His 1860 census listed him as 37. Both support the 1823 birth.
