MISSOULA - Hazel Luella (Koch) Bean-Langley was taken by the Lord on Sunday, April 2, 2006, at the home of Robert and Cindy Bean in Missoula.

She was born Aug. 29, 1915, to Peter Paul Koch and Ruby Edna Lowe of North gate, N.D. She was the oldest of four children.

After attending school in Northgate, Hazel accepted a nanny's job with a wealthy family in Shelby. While stopping to watch a local dance on the way home one night, she met her future husband, Russell Bean, who invited her to dance a few trips around the floor. This led to his hiring her as his nanny for his five children.
After earning enough money for tuition, Hazel enrolled in business college at Grand Forks, N.D., and worked for board and room doing housekeeping. About a year later she finished business school, excelling in shorthand.

A call from her future husband, Russell Owens Bean Sr., took her to Miles City to work as a bookkeeper/office manager for Russell's soon to open Singer Sewing Machine store. She was known as an excellent seamstress. Her business training paid off as she usually had to run the store while Russell was out on his sales calls throughout southeastern Montana.

In 1938, Russell asked her to marry him. Hazel designed and made outfits for Russell's children, Betty and Donna, who were active in the Drum and Bugle Corps of Miles City as baton twirlers and marchers. The Drum and Bugle Corps rehearsed in the basement of the Singer store.

In 1945, Russell accepted a job in Colstrip as an electrician, maintaining one of the largest shovels in the world, the 10-50. Hazel and Russell had four children during their time in Miles City and Colstrip. Hazel lost Russell tragically in 1949.

Alone, with no home, no transportation and a V.A. check ($192 per month income), Hazel managed to raise her four children and remaining stepchildren. We didn't have much, but we always had lots of love, something to eat and clothes on our backs. There were a lot of good people who watched out for us and Hazel was well-liked in the community.

With all stepchildren gone, Hazel moved to Hamilton in 1954, and in 1963 married longtime resident Vernon Langley. Vern and Hazel enjoyed 28 years together. Vern was well-loved by all.

Her death was preceded by her two husbands; her parents; brother Ray Koch of Northgate, N.D., and his wife Ellen; her sister, Maxine Abraham and her husband Jim; brother-in-law Adrianne Busch of Hamilton; and all six stepchildren, Florence Lydia Huether of Baker, Russell Owens Bean Jr. of Ontario, Calif., Betty Louise Bridgeford of Anaconda, Donna Dean Wimer of Colstrip, Charles Edward Bean of Baker and Maynard Sylvester Bean of Forsyth.

She is survived by her sister, Margie Busch of Hamilton; seven nieces and nephews; and nine grandnieces and grandnephews. Her pride were her four children and spouses: sons William Bean (Gene) of Bakersfield, Calif., Ray Bean of Missoula, Robert Bean (Cindy) of Missoula and daughter Bonnie Woolsey (Earl) of Bakersfield, Calif.

She would beam when the 12 grandchildren came to visit: Richard Bean, Nick Bean, William Bean Jr., Belinda Bean-Kelley, Russel Woolsey, Tracie Woolsey, Russell Bean, Chris Bean, Steven Bean, Robbie Bean, Chad Bean, Jessica Melynn Hazel Bean.

Her tradition and light carried on with 12 great-grandchildren: Riana Bean, Britney Bean, Nicholas Bean, Kristen Bean, Erica Bean, Savannah Bean, Trevor Kelley, Blaysha Kelley, Tierra Hazel Charisse Kelley, Chris Woolsey, Lisa Woolsey and Sidney Bean.

Special thanks to Hospice, Betty Belshe, family and friends who gave so much support. All memorials will be sent with respect to Hospice Society.

Viewing will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton. Graveside services will be held at Riverview Cemetery in Hamilton at 11 a.m. Monday and will be presided over by Mike McGovern, the Christian Assembly Foursquare pastor. The funeral service and reception will be at 3 p.m. Monday, at Christian Foursquare Assembly Church, 1001 Cleveland St, Missoula.

Arrangements are under the care of the Daly-Leach Chapel.
