Edward Mclaughlin continued his studies at Yale University on the Douglas Fellowship 1883-84. In 1884 he was appointed tutor in English and served as such until 1890, when he was promoted to an assistant professorship of the English language and literature. In June 1893, but a few weeks before his death from typhoid fever, a professorship of rhetoric and belles-letters was created for him. He had previously declined flattering offers from the University of Chicago and from Johns Hopkins. The Mclaughlin Memorial Fund of $1100 was established at Yale in 1893 by gifts from friends and former pupils and is devoted to the encouragement of English composition in the freshman class. Two prizes, in books, are offered annually from the income of the fund.
