Agnes Belle Groce married Winfrey Jay Coop on Jun. 4, 1937, in Cumberland County, Kentucky, USA.

=====================================

On Nov.19, 2014, Agnes “Belle” Coop, age 93, of Raleigh/Lewisville, Indiana, went home to be with her Lord while residing at Arbor Trace Senior Living Center in Richmond, Indiana, after an extended illness. She was a long time resident of Rush County, Indiana.

My mother, Agnes Belle Groce Coop, was born in Peytonsburg, Cumberland County, Kentucky, the third of four children of Emmett Leslie Groce and Hattie Mae Hughes Groce. She moved with her parents and siblings from Kentucky to Indianapolis, Indiana as a child. While living in Indianapolis, her father died of what she believed to be Leukemia when Belle was 12 years old. After the death of her father, Belle's mother took the family back to Cumberland County, Kentucky. Belle married the love of her life, Winfrey Jay Coop, when she was 15 years old (almost 16). Jay always said that Belle was the prettiest girl in the county (Cumberland County, Kentucky). Their first two children were born in Kentucky before they moved back to Indianapolis, Indiana in early 1941.

Her husband, who worked in a factory in Indianapolis, did not like working inside, and wanted to move to the country. In early 1947 they moved their family to a farm in Henry County, Indiana, southeast of Straughn where her husband farmed for two years. In early 1949 they moved to a farm in Boone County, Indiana, just north of a small town called Fayette, where her husband farmed for two years. In early 1951 they moved to the farm between Lewisville and Raleigh in northeast Rush County, Indiana, renting the farm from Mr. Barrett, a retired lawyer who lived in Indianapolis. Mr. Barrett came out to the farm one day to visit the family. Belle always thought that this visit was what prompted Mr. Barrett to offer to sell the farm to Jay and Belle, after he saw how clean the house was kept and how clean and well-behaved their children were. Belle was an excellent housekeeper and also an excellent cook. This farm continued to be owned by the Coop family until it was sold to Fairholme Farms (Drackett Family) of Lewisville, Indiana in 2015.

Belle, Jay, and family attended the Gospel Mission Church in Dublin, Indiana for several years until about 1955. After that time the Coop family attended the Methodist Church in Lewisville, Indiana. Belle was a member of the Methodist Church in Lewisville and the 1st Assembly of God Church in Wildwood, Florida. She stated that she was baptized at the age of 13 in Kentucky.

Belle always liked to read, especially the Bible, and had worked crossword puzzles as long as I can remember. She obtained her GED, because she had only attended school through the 8th grade in Kentucky. She had wanted to go on to high school, but there was no high school where she lived and anyone who wanted to go to high school had to live away from home. Her mother would not let her go away, because she said that too many girls were coming home pregnant. She stated that her mother was always very protective of her.

Belle had always liked to draw, but being a farmer's wife which included sometimes milking the cows and sometimes driving the tractor, raising a garden, canning and freezing food, sewing for her family, and all else involved with being the mother of seven children (eight later on) she was too busy to be able to exercise the talent that she had. Years later after most of her family was raised, she started going to art classes at Reid University in Richmond, Indiana. She began exhibiting her artwork at the Rush County Fair and began winning awards with her charcoals, pastels, and oil paintings. Later on while living in Florida, she was an active member of the Leesburg Art Association, and she was honored with a dedicated showing of her artwork at the Lake Sumter Community College, in Leesburg, Florida. She had a special talent for and enjoyed doing portraits, mostly of her family.

In about 1977, her husband, Jay, retired from farming. They began going to Florida for the winters. After about two years of their youngest son having to change schools between school in Florida and school in Mays, Indiana, they decided to live year round in Florida. In 1979 they bought a home in Sumter County, near Wildwoood, Florida, where they lived until Belle's health began failing in 1999. They moved to Bradenton, Florida, to be near their oldest daughter in 1999. In 2001 they moved back to Indiana to be near three of their daughters. Here they finally settled at the Flatrock River Lodge in Rushville, Rush County, Indiana where one of their daughters was the administrator.

She is survived by five daughters and one son, 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, many great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

While living at the Flatrock River Lodge, Belle was preceded in death by her husband, Jay; her son, Jackie; and her daughter, Teresa. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert Edward Groce, KIA in January 1945 in France in World War II, after being part of the Normandy Invasion at Omaha Beach in June 1944; her brother, Travis Leslie Groce; her sister, Ann Groce Johnson Lewis; her grandson, Matthew Scott Coop; and sons-in-law Dewey Max Wilson and Christopher Jon Smith.

Belle was buried in the Zion Cemetery, Raleigh, Indiana, within eyesight of the Coop family farm in Rush County, Indiana, on Saturday, November 22, 2014. She was buried alongside her husband of 74 years, Jay; her son, Jackie; and her daughter, Teresa.
