William Ragan Zittle, son of Josephine (née Bachtell) and Otho James Zittle, was born in 1874 near Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. The Zittle family moved in the late 1880s to Baltimore, Maryland.

William Zittle and Florence Mabel Schaur were married on 2 March 1899 in Baltimore. The couple had 12 children.

William Zittle was employed as steam fitter, tinner, auto shop repairman, and church janitor.
