Charles F. Butman, 61, was the son of William H. and Sarah (Stiles) Butman. He married first, Maria E. Paul in Windsor, Vermont on February 25, 1864. Maria died in 1880. Their surviving son, Luther went on to head the Empire Worsted Mills in Jamestown, NY.

He remarried two years later, to Annie B. Murphy in Waltham, Massachusetts on May 24, 1882.

He served in the Civil War, enlisting in Company A, Vermont 12th Infantry Regiment on 04 Oct 1862 and mustering out on 14 Jul 1863 at Brattleboro, VT.
