James was born the fourth child to James Samuel and Cora Guthery Bond. He entered the American Expeditionary Force and served in the Army during World War I. He was wounded in France in 1918 and died from his wounds. A chaplain wrote a letter to his parents extolling his exploits and his dedication after his passing. His body was shipped home to be buried near the family. He was predeceased by one sister and one brother. His parents, and two sisters survived him.
