George H. Armacost, a retired Bethlehem Steel Corp. worker and longtime Cockeysville resident, died at his home Wednesday of heart failure. He was 86.
Mr. Armacost who worked at Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point plant for 40 years, was chief of scheduling in the rod-and-wire mill when he retired in 1976.
Born in Waynesboro, Pa., he was raised in Westminster, where he graduated from high school in 1932. He attended Western Maryland College for three years before going to work for Bethlehem Steel in 1936.
During World War II, he served as a military police officer in Europe and was discharged in 1945.
He enjoyed duckpins and tenpins bowling and golf. He was a member of Sparrows Point Country Club.
In 1942, Mr. Armacost married the former Catherine Wynn, who survives him.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Epworth United Methodist Church, Warren and Ridgland roads in Cockeysville.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Armacost is survived by two sons, Gene C. Armacost of Pearl City, Hawaii, and Jan P. Armacost of Glenville, Pa.; a daughter, Virginia L. Armacost of Fairfax, Va.; two brothers, Rowland Armacost of Hinsdale, Mass., and John L. Armacost of Westminster; two sisters, Edith Ernest of Ladson, S.C., and Barbara Butler of Waynesboro, Va.; and three grandchildren.
