W. J. Abbott Dies of Accident Hurts
Injured When Struck by Car While Crossing Street
Father of City Judge Well known Resident
Former Rome Clothier and Hotel-keeper
Injuries sustained in an automobile accident last Wednesday night resulted in the death at the Rome Hospital last night of William J. Abbott, 74
Mr. Abbott, father of City Judge Walter W. Abbott, was struck at N. Washington and Huntington Sts., by a car driven by John R. Burke, 19, 105 E. Thomas St., as Mr. Abbott was walking across Huntington St. He suffered four fractured ribs, a punctured lung and shock. The attending physician stated there injuries caused death.
Assistant District Attorney Joseph A. Page summoned Dr. Preston Clark, New Hartford, coroner and disclosed that he had taken a statement from Mr. Burke, who said he saw Mr. Abbott and believed he was going to wait for him, Burke, to make the turn into Huntington St. but instead started ahead and was struck by the car.
Mr. Abbott, well known former Rome clothing merchant and hotel-keeper, resided with his aunt, Mrs. Mary A. Thomas, 203 W. Court St.
Born in Bouckville
He was born in Bouckville, Sept 21, 1862, a son of the late William and Mary Wootton Abbott. His father was a native of England and while there served in the Queen's Guard. He enlisted in the Northern Army in the Civil War and was killed in the battle of Antietam.
Mr. Abbott's younger life was spent in Eaton, where he attended the public schools. He came to Rome in 1884and for two years was employed as a boilermaker in the Rome Locomotive Works. He then opened a grocery store at 301 E. Dominick St. In 1889 he formed a partnership with George W. Snow and operated a retail clothing store under the firm name of Snow 7 Abbott at 149 W. Dominck St. As a side venture he ran the Abbott Opera House of Steuben St., in 1904-05.
In 1905, he withdrew from the clothing firm and went to Camden, where he conducted the Commercial House until 1908, when he purchased the United States Hotel at Taberg, operating it two years. From 1910 to 1914 he was connected with Mitchel & Thomas Co., Utica, managing first a store in Utica and for three years a store in Oneonta.
Constable in Binghamton
In 1914 he returned to Rome and soon thereafter opened Abbott's Inn at Lee, operating it four years. For a time he managed Stein's clothing store in Rome and about 1924 went to Binghamton to reside. There he served two two-year terms as city constable.
Mr. Abbott was twice married. His first wife was Anna Pritchard, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Pritchard, Floyd Hill, whom he married April 16, 1890. Her death occurred in 1923. In 1925, he married Rose Barber Ellsworth of Binghamton. She died in Binghamton Nov. 19, 1934. Following her death he came to Rome and had since resided here.
Mr. Abbott was a member of Independent Hose Co. No 1, more than 40 years ago and of the Firemen's Benevolent Association almost since its organization. He always, when living away from Rome, made special trips here to attend the annual meeting of the Firemen's Benevolent Association.
His lodge affiliations consisted of membership in the Elks, having been a member of the original Rome Lodge 96; Morrisville Lodge, F&A.M.; Rome Commandery 45, K. T.; Rome Lodge 266, I.O. O. F.; and Tuscarora Tribe 541, improved Order of Red Men, recently organized in Rome.
