MIDDLETOWN, RI--Alice Martins Abelheira, 89, of Middletown, died Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Forest Farm Health Care Center in Middletown, RI.
Born in Newark, NJ on June 6, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Albino Martins and Ana de Sousa Martins.
From the 1950s through 1965, Mrs. Abelheira worked beside her then husband in all aspects of construction, building numerous homes throughout Newport and Middletown. In 1965, they moved to Cascais, Portugal, where she lived for 13 years. She returned to Newport in 1978 and worked at Transcom Electronics and later at Raytheon, retiring in 1990.
She was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church. Alice loved to garden and took great pride in her beautifully flowering yard. She enjoyed bowling, knitting, crocheting and loved animals.
She is survived by her daughter, Isabel Abelheira of Middletown, RI; and her sisters, Cremilde from Portugal and Ilda from Venezuela.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2013 from 4-7:00 p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home, Newport.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, August 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in Jesus Savior Church in Newport.
Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
