George Miller Canfield Jr was born on June 17, 1880 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, the son of George Miller Canfield Sr (1854–1912) and his wife Louisa Alice (Disch) Canfield (1856–1935).

He was educated in Nashville's public schools, and he was married 1st to Blanche Larue Reeves (1882–1914) about 1901, the daughter of Joe M Reeves and Sallie (Cuzzort) Reeves. George married 2nd in 1915 to Marie Frances Hyde (ca 1897– ), and in April 1921 Marie filed for divorce and asked that her maiden name Hyde be restored to her. George was married 3rd to Annie Ward Cunningham (1902–1996), who was the daughter of Oliver Cromwell Cunningham (1857–1925) and his wife Roberta Lee (Cartwright) Cunningham (1867–1952).

A well-known Nashville sportsman who won numerous trophies in the city's golf competitions, George was a member of the board of directors of the Nashville District Golf Association and a member of Old Hickory Golf Club. Earlier in his life he was a pitcher for the Tallas, Texas baseball club and was an enthusiastic hunter. He was a member of Woodland Street Presbyterian Church and was a Shriner and a 32nd degree Mason.

The building superintendent of Cummins Station for 44 years, George lived at 3509 Englewood Golf Club Road in rural Nashville. He was 71 years old and married when he had a heart attack and died at home on September 28, 1951.

Survivors included his widow Annie Ward Cunningham Canfield, daughters Mrs William B Fuston in Detroit, Michigan, Mrs John Boyle of Dayton, Ohio, Mrs Eva Mullowney and Mrs C W Mastbrook at Nashville, a grandchild and sisters Mrs W C Sandefur, Mrs Lena Taylor and Mrs Harris Olney, all in Nashville.

Funeral Services were held on September 29th at Martin's, and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville.
