Vertle D. (Dave) Coles, 91, of Beloit, WI, died November 22, 2014 in Beloit Memorial Hospital. He was born January 2, 1923 in South Beloit, IL, the son of Loren John Thomas and Bertha Adele (Crandall) Coles. Dave attended Beloit High School, Beloit, WI. He joined the U.S. Navy in March of 1941 and served in the South Pacific aboard the USS Hornet until it was sunk. Dave then served on the USS North Hampton until it was sunk. Dave was formerly employed by Wisconsin Power & Light and farmed for a few years. He then moved to California and worked for the City of Pasadena for 14 years and Los Angeles County jail as a boilermaker, retiring in 1985.
