Gertrude Asenith Newkirk was born in Wabash County, Illinois, on April 4, 1880, to Rufus M. and Martha Hallock Newkirk, where she lived until her marriage to Clarence Verner Mundy.
Soon after their marriage they came to Eastonville, Colorado, where they lived five years. They then moved to their home southwest of Elbert, where they have lived since 1909, until her death November 3, 1954.
She was 74 years and 7 months of age. Mr. and Mrs. Mundy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 14, 1953. Mrs. Mundy has long been a member of the church, uniting with the Methodist Church at Nesbit Chapel, near Mt. Carmel, Illinois, at the age of 16, she later transferred her membership to the Elbert Presbyterian church where she remained a faithful member until her death. She took an active interest in her school and community affairs, being a member of the Cherry Homemakers Club and the Lincoln Community Club.
Surviving her besides her husband are her four children; Wm. Ray Mundy and Hugh Wheeler Mundy of Elbert; Van Allen Mundy and Carrie Fay Titus of Colorado Springs. Also, eleven grand children, and four great grand children. She also has two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Katherine Shearer of Bremerton, Washington; Miss Amy Newkirk and Allen Newkirk of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held from the Elbert Presbyterian church at 11 am. on Monday, November 8, 1954. Burial was made in the Elbert cemetery.
