BLANTZ (Wollenhaupt), Sarita
Was born March 25, 1923 in Gary (McDowell County) WV to Raymond and Julia (O'Toole) Wyland. After a long, fruitful, and productive life, Sarita passed away Friday, November 21, 2014 in Lawrenceburg, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Julia Wyland, her first husband, B. Omer Wollenhaupt, and her sister and brother-in-law Julia (Larry) Robers. She is survived by her husband, William Blantz, her children Barbara (George) Sferra, Michael (Janis) Wollenhaupt, Celia (Jesse) Schook, Christina (Ric) Skees, Stephen (Amy) Wollenhaupt, Sarah Anne Wildgoose, Andrew Blantz, Alison Blantz, Andrea Vedder, and Stephanie Baldivieso (our AFS daughter/ exchange student from Bolivia), as well as 12 grandchildren and a host of dear relatives, nieces, nephews, and friends.
After growing up in several cities and towns in West Virginia and Tennessee, Sarita attended the College of St. Mary of the Springs (now Ohio Dominican University) in Columbus, OH graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree. She then continued her formal education at The Ohio State University and earned her Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) degree. After graduating from Ohio State, Sarita settled in Dayton, Ohio where she held a number of jobs, including working several years for Maud Muller's Candy, and where she married B. Omer Wollenhaupt in 1947 and started a family. Upon the illness and resulting death of her first husband, Sarita returned to school to obtain teaching credentials, and then taught Art classes full time at Wilbur Wright High School in Dayton while raising her family. During her time teaching at Wilbur Wright, Sarita married William Blantz in 1969. After raising their 9 children, Sarita and William moved to Lawrenceburg, IN where she spent the remaining years of her life. Sarita was a faithful and loyal member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lawrenceburg, IN and a former member of Holy Angels Church in Dayton, OH. Sarita was a loving and caring wife and mother to her family and devoted her life to her husband and nine children always putting them first. She was also very active in her community and provided charitable assistance and community service to countless people through a number of activities including: Parish Council at Holy Angels Church in Dayton, hosting orphans from St. Joseph Orphanage in Dayton, Girl Scout Leader, volunteer tutor at the Dayton Youth Corrections Center, Volunteer at the Dayton Art Institute, Eucharistic Minister for the sick and shut-ins and lay minister in local hospitals in Dayton and Lawrenceburg, Renewal Program volunteer and Teacher's Aide at St. Lawrence Parish in Lawrenceburg, President of the Friends of the Library in Lawrenceburg, member of The Review Club of Lawrenceburg, and held various volunteer positions with numerous local historic organizations.
In addition to teaching art, Sarita was an accomplished artist who worked in many media throughout her life including watercolor, oil, and acrylic painting, silk screen printing, leaded glass, clay/ceramics, copper enamel, wood and linoleum cut printing, designing and crafting silver jewelry, among others. She was active in the local art community often participating in classes and seminars at Riverbend Arts Center in Dayton, and successfully marketing and selling some of her work in local shops. Sarita, as an artist, teacher, and volunteer gave freely of her time and energies to help enrich and improve the lives of others in her community. Sarita was also active socially, always making time for, and enjoying a good time or visit with friends and/or relatives. She was an avid Bridge player who played with numerous groups and also played Mah Jong regularly with local groups in Dayton and Lawrenceburg that she organized and taught how to play. She also enjoyed traveling and had the pleasure of visiting Europe, the western U.S., Hawaii, Africa, and Mexico...taking an extended trip to Mexico with six of her children. Sarita was a treasure to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her and will be sadly missed by all. She has certainly passed to a better place and can now rest in peace knowing her work in this life has been completed. She leaves behind a long legacy of children, grandchildren, numerous relatives, friends, and others whose lives she enriched and enhanced. Her family would like to extend sincere thanks to those who gave such wonderful and thoughtful care to her, particularly the staffs of Dearborn County Hospital and Woodridge Health Campus. Your gentle and sensitive treatment was a great comfort to her, and to us, in such a difficult time.
Visitation will be 11:00am - 1:00pm, Friday, November 28th at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lawrenceburg, IN. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Lawrence Church at 1:00pm, directly following visitation. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Massillon, OH on Saturday, November 29th. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Friends of the Lawrenceburg Public Library District, 150 Mary Street, Lawrenceburg, IN 47025; or St. Lawrence School 524 Walnut St., Lawrenceburg, IN 47025.
