Mark the son of Richard E. Tyler and Florence E. Tyler of Detroit Michigan enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 1 1967 in Detroit. He arrived in Vietnam on February 13 1968 where he was assigned to and served with Company G, 2d Battalion, 26th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of June the Battalion was deployed at several Fire Support Bases in northern Quang Tri Province with Company G providing security and patrols from C-2 in the vicinity of Route 561 5 kilometers north east of Cam Lo.

On June 15, the defensive positions underwent an NVA artillery attack during which PFC Tyler was killed by the multi fragmentation wounds he sustained by the hostile fire.
