James Perry Patman was listed in the following Confederate Regiments during the Civil War:

James was given a medical discharge as early on as 1862. He previously had two bouts of pneumonia before he entered the war. He was probably still unhealthy when he was captured by the Union Forces and spent time at Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. When he was released from Libby Prison 22 Apr 1865, he was sick and he walked all the way from Richmond, Virginia to Floyd County, Georgia.

The children James had with 1st wife Lucy thought their father had died during the war and walked to Texas with their guns and a little cart for their sister Sally to ride in. Along the way, they met up with Mary Ann Harper Beville and her children from Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. With the Beville horses and the Patman's protection, they traveled together to Hopkins County, Texas.

James Perry Patman is buried in an unmarked grave in Floyd County, Georgia. His father John W Patman was buried in the Kinnebrew Cemetery, Rome, Floyd County, Georgia. That may be where he and his 1st wife are buried. He and his 2nd wife Lucinda lost a little boy Thomas A Patman who was born around 1868/69. His burial place is also unknown Their daughter James Lillian Patman was born in Dec 1970. After James Perry Patman died, Lucinda took James Lillian and followed the other children to Hopkins County, Texas.
