When young Bernard was only 13 yrs. of age he came to the United States in order to escape being drafted in the German Army, In those days if parents could afford it they would, pay something to have their sons escape - the young men would be placed in potato sacks, put on a boat and when they were three miles off shore, the sacks would be open and they were free to enjoy the long voyage to the United States. Eventually Bernard found his way to Cincinnati where he became owner of two saloons. It was said that at one time he gave refuge to some runaway slaves in one of the saloons.
