Francis Jane Curtis is the daughter of Samuel Roe Curtis and Sarah Smith. She married Jim Darby at the close of the civil war. Jim was 32 and Francis was 18, Jims two sons from a previous marriage were 10 and 13. When Jim died Francis continued to raise her 2 daughters and her step son Henry Cole. Jims oldest son John Jr. married his step mothers youngest sister Hattie Curtis. When Hattie died John Jr. and his infant daughter Minnie moved back in with his stepmother Francis.
Some years later Francis remarried a Methodist Minister Rev. Whately. When Rev Whately died she married for the third time to another Methodist minister Rev Benjamin Lafayette Spruill. After his death she moved in with her daughter Mattie Johnson in Poplaville Mississippi until her death at the age of 83.
