Mary Cartwright, 84 of Munday, died peacefully Saturday morning at Knox County Hospital. Funeral Service will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Munday Church of Christ, under the direction of McCauley-Smith Funeral Home, with Wayne Speer, minister of Munday Church of Christ officiating.

Mrs. Cartwright was born in Paint Creek February 6, 1930 to W.A. (Alford) and Fay Fowler. She grew up in the Paint Creek and Haskell areas, attending public schools at Sales, Paint Creek and the at Haskell, where she graduated from Haskell High School and was named to Who’s Who at HHS.

She married Alonzo S. (Al) Cartwright Nov. 22, 1949 at her parents’ home in Haskell. She lived the rest of her live in Knox County, on the family farm between Munday and Goree and the in Munday for the next 53 years. Mary was known for her gentle spirit and for her hard work in church and civic endeavors and in many different avenues personally. While living on the farm, she had a butter and egg business and later sold Avon for many years. She opened and owned and ran The Children’s Center clothing store on the square in Munday for several years. She later worked for the City of Munday, at Miller Creek Water Authority and then was Assistant Vice President at First National Bank of Munday until her retirement in 1994. During most of these years she also did handmade crafts including numerous items swen and hand painted wooden Jewelry. During her later years she concentrated on making quilts and donated many of these for fundraising efforts.

She was a faithful member of Munday Church of Christ for 54 years, was a member of the Board of Directors of Knox County Historcal Commission, and among other volunteer efforts, was a member of the Munday Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, where she was named Citizen of the Year in 1995.

She is survived by her brother James Fowler and wife Bobbe of Whitney; sister Shirley Strickland and husband Leroy of Hawley; son Lou and wife Janis of Austin; daughter Lisa Cartwright and husband Lenny Benedetto of Garland and daughter Cathy and her husband David Martin of Rockwall; grandchildren Ali Bailey and husband Alex of Abliene; Cilff Cartwright of Abliene; Rachel Flutcher and husband Seth of Fredrick, CO; Jaron Peek and wife Tiffany of Bedford; Randall Martin and wife Dani of Grand Prairie; Phillip Martin of Denton; Kate Martin and Justin Parker of Joshua; Samantha Martin of Garland. Great-grandchildren Gunnar Cartwright, Sam Bailey, Calla Fletcher, Jayden Parker, Maddisen Martin, Luke Martin and Jensen Parker.

She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Al and son James P. (Pat) Cartwright.

Pallbearers are grandsons Cliff Cartwight, Alex Bailey, Jaron Peek, Seth Flutcher, Randall Martin, and Phillip Martin. Special thanks to Dr. Kevin Finley and the entire staff of Knox County Hospital and to many special friends at Munday Church of Christ and elsewhere and especially to friends and caregivers, Margarita Aguayo, Cris Carranza and Charles Willison.
