He attended Harrisburg Academy before furthering his education at Yale University.
While at Yale he was a member of the football team and in 1893 he was named to Walter Camp's All American Team as the first-team quarterback.
Following graduation, at his girlfriend's urging, he visited the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle Pa. to help them organize their first team.
A lifelong Democrat, McCormick was active in local, state, and national politics.
At various times he served on Harrisburg's City Council, as Mayor of Harrisburg, delegate to the Democratic National Convention, and served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
In 1914 he was the Democratic standard-bearer for the governorship but lost.
He was also an advisor to then-President Woodrow Wilson.
