SGT. Kenneth D. Hess of Asheville, N.C., grew up in Haw Creek and attended Reynolds High School. He joined the Army in 2000 and lived in Alaska with his wife. He was a very protective big brother, he held his sister's hand on the way to school on her first day of kindergarten and made sure she got there OK. As a kid, he loved baseball, was an avid camper, liked fast cars and taking things apart and putting them back together.
He is survived by his wife, April T. Hess; his son from a previous relationship, Alex Nelson; his mother, Kathy Helton Blackwell and her husband, Dannie, his father, Terry D. Hess; his sister, Tandace H. Taylor; and his paternal grandmother, Clara Hess. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Barbara Conner and his paternal grandfather, Dell Hess Jr. He was 26.
