William O'Dale Stevens had been in the circus business since he was four years old, his parents, Henry Peter Stevens and Elizabeth Britton, circus performers. He traveled with them to South Africa, India, China, the Philippine Islands, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and Madagascar, where his father died in 1872. He performed with various shows including John Murray's Circus on its trip to the West Indies when it was shipwrecked, Barnum's Show, and the London before it was consolidated with Barnum's. He eventually organized a show of his own called the Great Australian Circus.

William was married to Linda Jeal, a hurdle-rider, who survived him. as does his mother, a brother and a sister (now in England). He was an excellent performer, doing an equilibristic act, balancing with his feet a large cross, a table and a barrel, a globe-running act, besides being an excellent leaper and a good general performer.

William died at his home in Jersey City, N.J.at age 29.

Burial: Original burial Oct. 2, 1883, in receiving vault #327. Approximately one year later, on Nov. 13, 1884, he was moved & buried in Block #20, Lot #6, Grave #7; undertaker Thomas Stiff. Records indicate that William is the only burial in the grave. This grave is located up on the western ridge of the cemetery - the far right side as you enter the main gate.
