Educated for the priesthood at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary then at 18th and Race Streets in Philadelphia, he was ordained on January 23,1855 by the Rt. Rev. James Roosevelt Baley, DD, Bishop of Newark. He served at St. John the Evangelist at 13th and Market Sts. in Philadelphia, St. Patrick's in Harrisburg and a parish in Wimington DE and again at St. John's before being appointed as Pastor to St. Matthew's Parish in Conshohocken on September 21,1863. Father Kinahan established an elementary school in the basement of the original church located at Hector and Harry Sts (since demolished)and in 1865 opened a high school. The original school building on the 200 block of East Hector Street was opened in 1872(the building still stands).Father Kinahan saw education at the center of Catholic life. He erected an observatory on the grounds of the school in October of 1883 and at the time of his death willed his scientific instruments to the parish school. He also oversaw the establishment of the St. Matthew's Scientific Asso. on July 8, 1890. At the time of his death the Conshohocken "Recorder" praised Father Kinahan noting that he was a " man who has done more during his long residence here for the moral and physical uplift of this community."
