Alexander J. Heitman, supervisor of business and support services for Oak Ridge schools, was found dead Monday in Cocke County, according to police reports.

Cocke County Sheriff's Department Detective Robert Caldwell confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that Heitman, 29, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The detective said Heitman's body was discovered Monday by boys who were riding all-terrain vehicles in a remote area of Newport.

Heitman, of Madison, Wis., was named the Oak Ridge schools' supervisor of business and support services in 2009. And, just last month, school officials were notified Heitman had attained national certification as a school financial officer through the Association of School Business Officials International.

Oak Ridge Schools Superintendent Tom Bailey described Heitman's death as "a tragic loss to Oak Ridge schools."

"He was part of our family," added Bailey.

"His wife teaches here … we've all suffered a terrible loss."
