Librarian. Gilded Age society figure. He was the son of Almon and Cyria White Dwight. In 1880, while the librarian for the Department of State he met and aided the historian Henry Adams in researching his works. By 1885, he had become Adams' secretary and assistant, and began to catalog the Adams family library and papers, including those of Presidents John and John Quincy Adams. In 1892, he became director of the Boston Public Library. He was active in the homo-erotic subculture among the wealthy and intellectual classes that flourished in the late 19th century and which included literary figures Walt Whitman and Charles Warren Stoddard. He had an intimate relationship with the playwright Thomas Russell Sullivan, the first to stage "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." He married Sally Pickman Loring, daughter of U.S. Representative George Bailey Loring.
