William ‘Bill’ D. Wessel, Sr., age 76, of Okawville, Ill. formerly of O'Fallon, died Monday December 1, 2014, at Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. He was a faithful member of St. Barbara Catholic Church in Okawville. Bill enjoyed working with people and creating life-long lasting relationships.

With 47 years in the banking industry, he retired in 2007 as the Vice President of Bank of O'Fallon with 27 years (1980-2007) of serving the community with its banking needs. He was loved and respected by many local residents.

He served his country 1957-1960 as a member of the 42nd Airborne Division, Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Bill's passions were his family, his grandchildren , outdoor sports (hunting and fishing with his two sons), and the Cardinals. He played baseball and basketball in high school and was inducted into O'Fallon High School Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in basketball. He was a member of the O'Fallon Jaycees and served as president, and was a member of the O'Fallon Sportsman Club and served as president for 13 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oren and Opal, nee Thouvenot, Wessel and his sister Doris Jean Wessel in infancy. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn J., nee Baima, Wessel whom he married July 1, 1964, daughter Kelly Ann (Bob) Balzer of San Diego Calif., son William (Colleen, nee Prokopf) Wessel of Trenton, Ill., son Rob (Ana, nee Montoya) Wessel of O'Fallon, and grandchildren Kim, Whit and Brandon.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society and American Heart Association. Memorial masses may be addressed to St. Barbara Catholic Church and St. Clare Catholic Church.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, Friday, December 5, 2014 at St. Clare Catholic Church, Shiloh, Ill.

Mass of Christian Burial: 1:00 pm, Saturday, December 6, 2014 at St. Clare Catholic Church with Rev. James Deiters presiding . Burial will follow at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery.
