Daughter of the proprietor of the Windsor Hotel in NYC. At a dramatic fire on St. Patrick's Day, 1899, Ms. Leland jumped from a sixth floor window to escape the flames, as did many other people. Her's was one of the unidentified bodies piled on the sidewalk along Fifth Avenue. These bodies were interred at Kensico. A monument to their memory was unveiled on October 9, 2014. An estimated 90 people died in the conflagration that destroyed the building including two firefighters, Battalion Chief William J. Walsh and Foreman Charles S. Bass. An exact count was never confirmed.

Helen's mother, Isabella and a cousin also perished in the fire. Her father Warren died less than a month after the fire. His death was attributed to the shock and stress of the fire and deaths, but it was later learned that the actual cause was from appendicitis.

A cenotaph to Helen's memory stands on the grave of her parent's at Woodlawn Cemetery in Chicago.
