He was the son of Abraham and Ann (Beard) Lavell of Augusta County, Va. He married in January 1856 Lucy Turpin Ackerly, widow of William Ackerly of Rockbridge Co., Va. He fought bravely under General Stuart in the 1st Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A. He was a prosperous farmer and a stock dealer. He lived in Rockrbridge County in the home (Willow Pond) of his wife, Lucy, that she had inheirted at the death of her husband.He became a loving step father to Lucy's two sons. Abraham and Lucy would have six children, although three would die in infancy. Lucy died on Dec. 16, 1899.
He married for a second time to Miss Lucy Hudson, daughter of Robert J. and Sarah Jane (Rucker) Hudson, both of Amherst County, Va. on Feb. 2, 1901.No further children were born of this second marriage. He died on Oct. 29, 1921, and was buried in the Ackerly family burying ground near his first wife, Lucy.
