NOTES
William appears in KY civil war records and his widow got a pension after his death in 1911.
William had married Jerusha Elkins who died after the birth of a daughter, Didame.
William feared the mother-in-law was going to take the child, so he boarded her in MO and later sent for her when he got settled in Texas
There is a photo of William and his new wife & child.

Below is Isaiah Spencer and Joel's affidavit for the 1913 Widow Pension Application of Maggie Cox, widow of William A. Cox.

Joel S. Cox, age 78 years: "My name is Joel S. Cox, and I reside in Madison County, Arkansas, and my post office is Crosses, Arkansas.
William A. Cox, deceased was my brother and I was with him during the war, and know that he enlisted in the service of the Confederacy and performed the duties of a soldier.
He belonged to Company "A", 1st Regmt. Mounted Riflemen.
He enlisted at Letcher County, KY, January 1862, and served over three years.
He was a private soldier only." /s/ Joel S. Cox

Witness: My name is Isaiah Spencer.
I reside in Wolfe County, KY and my post office is Zachariah, KY.
My age is 70 years and I saw William A. Cox sworn in as a Confederate soldier in the year 1862.
He enlisted ...........the 1st Battalion of Kentucky Mounted Riflemen.
I was with him and I knew that he served 3 years in the Confederate Army he enlisted and was sworn into the service in my presence in Letcher County, KY January 1862.
He was a private soldier and .......... my rank was that of a private soldier. /s/ Isaiah Spencer."
