Doris Soroky Aarenau (nee Liebowitz), of Las Vegas, passed away Nov. 30, 2014, after suffering from a long illness resulting from a fall in November 2013. Doris was a devoted wife to her husband, of 14 years, Richard Aarenau. "She was everything I wanted in a wife, brilliant, beautiful and a wonderful grandparent and bonus parent to my children and grandchildren." Doris enjoyed an excellent education having received two doctorates, one in linguistics and the other in special education. As a result of this education, Doris rose to the rank of superintendent of schools for the Los Angeles Unified School District for Special Education. Doris retired from the school district and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1987. She soon became involved in her new community, serving as the first President of the Las Vegas Jewish Community Center, as well as being responsible for starting the Las Vegas Holocaust Survivors Group which has seen an increase in membership now that the children of the survivors have become involved. Doris also served on the board of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas for several years and was an active member of Temple Beth Shalom. Doris was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Marks; and her husband, of many years, William Soroky. Doris is survived by her husband, Richard; her grandchildren, Ryan Marks of St. Bellwood, Neb., Zachary Akerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Nicole Stucker of Grinnell, Iowa; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Doris leaves behind many friends, who appreciated her wit and concern for others. Services were private. The family requests that any donations made in her memory, be directed to the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, 2317 Renaissance Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89119.
